While some people might make new year's goals that encourage them to take a step back from kpop, touch a little more grass perhaps, we here at Auntiny & Co. have decided to go the other direction and see just how far we can let ATEEZ invade all aspects of our life.
And to further our Noble and Good works, we've created our very own 'Will it ATEEZ?' reading challenge for the coming year.
what is 'will it ATEEZ'?
For a while now, Bobby and I have been playing a little game we like to call 'Will it ATEEZ?'
text exchange between Bobby and GD on Wednesday, Sept 23
GD: I'm not into fashion so there isn't much for me during fashion week. But perhaps we should be timely and watch The Devil Wears Prada and try to connect it to ateez's lore.
Bobby: Do you think such a thing is possible?
GD: I think anything is possible if you work hard and believe.
The Devil Wears Prada and my resulting What to Watch Wednesday post was the start of our little game, but it has only grown from there. Sometimes it's a simple text exchange regarding the latest show we've seen, and sometimes it's a full blown thesis in the works. In fact, in my humble opinion, the greatest thing this blog or any blog has ever published was Bobby's 'Will it ATEEZ?: A Family for the Orphans', where she was able to draw connections between a Not Good faith-based romance and ATEEZ.
The game itself is very simple: after we watch/read/see something, we ask ourselves 'can I find any connection in this to ATEEZ?'
It is a game that, like many ATEEZ related things, has given me pockets of joy. It lets me look at the world around me in new and different ways and challenges me to think more deeply about things I may have dismissed.
so what's the 2024 reading challenge?
Let me be so clear: this is not a book club.
People who have known Bobby and I for a while know that we have attempted (and largely failed at) creating an ATEEZ centered book club before. I think I could write a symposium's worth of things I learned from the experience and why it was unsuccessful, but the bottom line is that neither of us are in a position to attempt a book club again.
But, what I do want and am ready for, is a reason and excuse to read more. Hence, our 'Will it ATEEZ?' Reading Challenge.
Bobby and I have each chosen 6 books that we want to read which probably have absolutely nothing to do with ATEEZ and created a year long reading syllabus. We will read one book each month, (though in an effort to keep our reading matching our mood, we have only decided on the first 4 books) and then we will develop our Thoughts on whether the book ATEEZs or not.
Because this is a challenge (again, not a book club), we have not really decided on how the aforementioned Thoughts will be developed.
Perhaps the book will inspire both of us to write a detailed post; perhaps it will inspire only one of us; perhaps we will want to share a transcript of us discussing it; or perhaps a book will convince us it really is time to start that podcast. And it's entirely possible that we will read the book and decide there is not in fact anything to discuss so we will just ignore it entirely.
We don't know what the challenge will bring, which is the exciting thing about a challenge. All we know is that we want to read books, and we want to discuss together whether those books connect to ATEEZ.
what books are we reading?
In order to prepare ourselves for the fun ahead, we have set our reading schedule for the next 4 months.
January: Nine Liars, by Maureen Johnson (#5 in the Truly Devious series, but a standalone novel)
February: Sadie, by Courtney Summers
March: Lessons in Chemistry, by Bonnie Garmus
April: Charm City Rocks, by Matthew Norman
Towards the end of the 4 months, we will determine our reading mood temperature to see what books we're in the mood for and determine our next book from there. But the other 8 books that we will read at some point this year are:
Tress of the Emerald Sea, by Brandon Sanderson
The Red Palace, by June Hur
Upon a Frosted Star, by M.A. Kuzniar
You, Again, by Kate Goldbeck
The Roommate, by Rosie Danan
Happy Place, by Emily Henry
Genuine Fraud, by E. Lockhart
A Study in Drowning, by Ava Reid
We invite you to read along with us, or develop your own book list to run through the ATEEZ gauntlet. Happy reading, happy new year, and may you find ATEEZ waiting to bring you joy just around every corner!
Be the light.
